Follow-up
It’s important to have a follow-up three or four weeks after the abortion. You can have the follow-up at your GP or at our clinic, usually done by phone. In some cases, we will book an appointment for you to visit our clinic.
We will book an in-person appointment when:
- a coil was fitted directly after the day treatment;
- after the abortion pill treatment, you want us to fit a coil;
- you have (prolonged) symptoms or (you have had) complications.
Follow-up by phone
On the day of your follow-up, you take a pregnancy test at home. The doctor or nurse will phone you on or around the agreed time. Please make sure you can be reached by phone and that you are at a quiet location where you can speak freely. Our number is withheld when we call you (anonymous).
We will discuss your physical recovery and whether you are (still) experiencing any symptoms. We will also require after your emotional state and your coping with the abortion. In addition to this, we will discuss contraception.
Aftercare at the clinic
The doctor or nurse will perform a pregnancy test and make an ultrasound scan to make sure everything is fine. If you want to, we can also fit a coil or contraceptive implant. Within your next menstruation cycle, the procedure is free of charge, but you do pay for the contraceptive itself.
We will discuss your physical recovery and if you are (still) experiencing any symptoms. We will also inquire after your emotional state and how you are coping with the abortion. In addition to this, we will discuss contraception.
Positive pregnancy test/residual tissue
Sometimes a pregnancy test comes up positive at the follow-up. This is usually caused by a fragment of pregnancy tissue left in the uterus after the abortion treatment. Only in rare cases is there an uninterrupted pregnancy. The chance of residual tissue after the abortion pill is approximately 5-6%. The chance of residual tissue after suction curettage is approximately 1-2%. If this happens to you, the doctor will decide, in consultation with you, if additional medication or curettage is required.
